DIY Centre - Introduction
Saving money by self publishing is a trade-off between time and money.
If you have the time and interest, great savings can be made by doing much of the work yourself.
There are, of course, some things that have to be paid for.
At best, these are only the services of third party publishers, printers and web hosts.
Everything else depends on the resources you have available and filling in the gaps with either; capital investment, such professional software, cameras, lighting, etc.; or contracting specific work to a design/production studio when doing so is cheaper than purchasing new equipment.
The key to knowing where savings can be made are in the technical requirements of the different media formats. The first step is, therefore, to decide what medium your content will finally be displayed on, paper, internet or screens, or in other words, print, web or video formats. Listed at the bottom of this page are some general requirements commonly demanded by commercial print, web and video formatsview. For more information, an internet search will provide many results from which you can chose those that meet you level of understanding. For technical details, the adobe website has a lot of information. Your local library is also worth a look, and don’t forget the kids section, they have the simplest explanations.
After you know the media specifications it’s time to convert or create original content to meet those requirements. This is where you may or may not need to purchase addition products or services. Knowing how to get the most out of your resources will reduce these expenses. The articles in this section offer broad advice on how to evaluate your equipment and tips on how they can be used to meet different media requirements. Lokivore also offers a content assessment service that will evaluate your content and explain how best to bring it up to commercial specifications. These assessments include evaluating the suitability your equipment and instructions on how best to use it, and the cost is deductible from services purchased from Lokivore related to the assessed content.
Once you have all your content in suitable formats you can start to consider the artistic aspects of your project. Some of these maybe preordained, like corporate colour schemes, but for everything else, not matter what your theme, the chances are someone has done something similar before. Look for these and think of them as guides as to what is conventional practice and what you can do differently to make you project stand out. Good design needs both conformity and originality to quickly catch an audience’s attention. Pure originality is often referred to as, ‘before its time,’ and historically makes money for people other than the artist.
The rest, as they say, is up to you.
I hope you find something useful in the articles below and wish you good luck and all the best for your future endeavours.
But if you have any questions, please feel free to call and we’ll do our best to help.
Regards, the Lokivore team.
